Stones themselves are ancient and are connected to the spirit of the earth and the universe. Think of where a given stone might have originally came from, perhaps not even our solar system. Think how old a stone might be, perhaps since the beginning of the creation of the earth or universe itself. Whoever carved the runes into the stones definitely wanted to send a message through time. A lasting one. That is communication on another level. Everything in this modern world is so disposable.
Runes were just as often carved on wood. I guess the runes could have been carved on pretty much anything, even flesh. But carvings in stone would definitely last longer, centuries, perhaps even on into the afterlife.
Viking carvings are carvings made, often in stone, by Vikings. They wrote messages on the stones with their alphabet called the runes. They also carved drawings of their gods, everyday life, special events or a memorial.

The runes were an alphabet used by the ancient Germanic tribes and ancient Scandinavians. Prior to being used as an alphabet, the runes had magic purposes, such as casting lots (divination) and casting spells of protection.
The vikings wrote with the Futhark. Its a character row that was designed to be carved into wood or stone. They didn't have parchment or paper, so books and whatnot were nearly impossible. Stories and other knowledge was passed down verbally. However, there are MANY examples of rune carved monuments, as well wooden stakes and tablets with quick short messages. Many of them were used by traders to identify goods.The runes were also believed to be magical, and is the basis of one of the two viking age style of magic, called galdr.
There are lots of stones around with viking runes on them. None as densely engraved as the Egyptian Rosetta stone, and none that have more than one language on them. However runes were used during the paper era and we have good representation for the language using them.
Mostly Fire runes but Law runes and Air runes are not far behind them.
