punicus is the Latin word for Phoenician. Carthage (in present day Tunisia) was a colony of Phoenicians from the eastern Mediterranean (present day Lebanon). Hence the three wars the Romans fought against Carthage were known as the Punic Wars, just as their wars against the Gauls were the Gallic Wars.
