Your player may not support MP3.

Your mp3s may be encoded in a way which is not compatible with your CD player. Many CD players cannot play variable-bitrate mp3s for example.

Sometimes my car stereo (which supports mp3) has difficulty with some of the cheaper CD media. Cds which are odd colors are often not readable by in-dash players.

Why is it that when you play your mp3 player in your car the volume is so low and wont go as high as your speakers can put out?

A sound system basically consists of 3 parts; a sound source, an amplifier, and speakers. An amplifier can only amplify the signal so may times. If the strength of the signal from the car CD player or radio is 10 and the strength of the signal from the mp3 player is 2, then at the same rate of amplification the mp3 player will be quieter than the car CD/radio. It also depends on how you've hooked it up. If you're trying to power the speakers directly from the mp3, don't expect much, it's only sized to power headphones. You should have something called "line in" where the mp3 hooks up.
