Usually the front brakes wear out first. Brake usage isn't covered under warranty because wear depends on how the person uses them. If you use them a lot more (stop and go traffic) they wear out a lot faster. if the rear are worn, check the front as well.
Take it to the dealer.
If the the brakes replace from a dealer for the front brakes including re-surfacing the rotor disc is.......$420.00
If you take it to the VW dealer and need brakes / rotors on all 4 hubs it will cost around $2100.00 but if you can do it yourself it will be much less..
About $400 at a Honda dealer, but check around because prices vary depending on how much actually has to be done to the brakes.
I am assuming you are referring to drum type brakes versus disk. If you buy OEM brakes from the dealer the instructions are included in the box. At least this was the case for a 2004 Forester. It is worth buying the brakes from the dealer since you can be sure you are getting the right part number since they require the VIN number. As to the difficulty, I have not changed the brakes yet so I cannot provide an accurate assessment.
I had the Mercedes dealer replace my front discs for about $300.00 USD.Previously I purchased Rotors and brakes for the front for $200.00 on line.Any mechanic can change the rotor and brakes for about $50.00.I hope this answers your question.
for best results use OE (dealer parts)
Brakes may or not be paid by your insurance or dealer depending on the company and the warranty in which your car is under. Consult dealer or insurance to verify.
Just had the front brakes and rotors replaced, rear brakes adjusted, 2004 Kia Sedona, $537 at a Kia dealer. You can get it cheaper from a good local mechanic, maybe $350.00 - $400.00.
The dealer most likely didn't check the brakes. If you don't have a warranty that covers brakes, you will be paying for them.
Take it to a Toyota dealer. After the gas pedal sticks or the brakes don't work! Or wait and see if it goes on a recall list.
the cost of new brakes is irrelevant.... However, what you have to pay is important and its a lot if you take it to the dealer.
