∙ 15y agoIt does happen sometimes although I am not sure exactly why. We had a litter that the mother killed. The bitch was 8 years old and had never been bred before so that may have had something to do with it. I have heard that a bitch will kill her puppies if she feels she can not care for them or if there is something wrong with the puppies. In our case I think it might have been a combination of the age and the line of dog we were breeding. This particular bitch was very high energy and has a high prey drive. No matter what the cause it can be a very upsetting experience for the dog owners.
