It depends on what type of jewels or gems you are talking about. Lava may not be hot enough to melt those jewels that are a product of high temperature formation. Gemstone melting points vary greatly.

Lava, by definition (Wikipedia) is "...both ... molten rock expelled by a volcano during an eruption and the resulting rock after solidification and cooling."

Diamonds are blasted to the surface of the earth through volcanic pipes that contain trace minerals, such as kimberlite and lamproite. This composition is different from the more common 'molten rock' that we know as lava.

You would have a lava clump that encased a diamond. Once cooled, you could chip away the lava and find your diamond.

Best practices indicate that you do not try this at home.

No. Diamonds are composed of carbon, which has the highest melting point of any substance. However, lava may potentially coause diamonds to chemically break down.
