Up until now, most tulips produced only one flower per bulb. There are new tulip varieties though that are producing more than one flower on a stem. These are more likely to be found in gardening catalogs rather than in the box store around the corner.

Also, bulbs multiply underground and each sends up its own plant with a flower. The resulting clump of tulip plants can fool the eye into thinking there are more than one flower on a stem.

Can you grow a bulb from a cut tulip?

If you're referring to tulips that are in pots, still attached to their bulbs, yes. You can either plant them in the spring or in the fall. If you plan on planting them in the fall, remove the bulbs from their location and place them in a bag of soil and leave in a dark, damp location until fall.

What create broken tulip so highly valued by the seventeenth-century dutch?

Especially valued were the bi-colored tulips, known as 'broken' tulips. Tulip bulbs naturally produce only solid color blooms. If aphids infest the bulb, an insect-borne disease causes the flower's color to streak in broken lines against white petals. As the bulb blooms year after year, the streaked patterns change, becoming more erratic. But the disease also weakens the bulb, killing the plant prematurely.

Does tulip plants reproduce from bulbs?

When the tulip flower has died, you will notice that the area where flower has attached to the stem swells larger and larger. It is producing seeds. If you plant the seeds, it can take 5-7 years for the seeds to develop into bulbs which produce the tulip plants. Bulbs are necessary to store food for the next year's stem, leaves, and flower. It's best to clip off the flowers and at least part of the stem (deadheading) as soon as the flower has died to prevent the seeds from developing. This allows the plant to spend it's energy producing food for bulb storage rather that wasting energy on unnecessary seeds. Bulbs can multiply underground, be separated, and you can use the new bulbs to start more tulip plants in another location.
