Why did Anna Morgan kill Samara?
Anna and Richard Morgan adopted Samara because all they wanted was a child of there own. But every thing went wrong. When Samara was around Anna had gruesome pictures in her head, Anna couldn't sleep or concentrate. Samara's presence made the horses go insane, run to the beach and drown. Samara also never slept and it wasn't long before Richard and Anna were terrified of her. Richard moved Samara into the barn hoping everything would stop but it didn't. Anna could not cope anymore, and attempted to kill Samara, she put a bag over her head, hit her with a brick and threw her into a well. Anna then jumped of a nearby cliff and died. Samara lived for 7 days, destroying her fingernails trying to get out. When she died her evil spirit created a cursed video tape using her projected thermography power. Everyone who watches it will suffer as she did unless they create a copy and show someone else. Samara only wanted to be heard.

In the book and the Japanese version (Ringu) it was hinted that the tape was created throught Samara/Sadako's eyes. It was her experiances, seen through her eyes. The tape was thought to be an embodiment of all Samara/Sadako's hate.

In the Ring Two it made it a little clearer why. She wanted a mother. she was looking for a person (mainly the main character's son) to enter in spirit form so that his mother would have to be her mother. "Rachel manages to shake her off and then causes a jet of water to come out of the side of the well. Samara loses her grip and falls back down the well, however, she begins climbing again at a rapid rate. Rachel climbs out of the well just as Samara cries '"Mommy!"' in a deep voice. Rachel responds angrily that she's not her mother and pushes the lid shut just as Samara is about to escape, trapping her in the well."
