This depends on how the system is configured. By default on most systems, the drive will be detected and probed for the identity of the file systems on the drive, but the drive will not be mounted. It is possible to configure the system to automatically mount the drive by adding an entry in /etc/fstab. I'm not an expert in computer forensics, but if the drive uses a journaling file system (most do not), you may want to avoid mounting the disk; this will cause the journal to be replayed if drive was not previously unmounted properly, and will discard potential data that was not properly committed to the journal.

Yes. USB was invented to be hot swappable. At the same time, to avoid damages to any devices, do not unplug the device without going thru the proper removal procedure once plugged in. This is especially true for a Hard Drive
SCSI Harddrive:80-pin Connector The SCA interface was designed to provide a standard connection for systems using hot swappable drives. SCA interface drives connect to a SCSI backplane that provides power, configuration settings such as SCSI ID, and termination of the SCSI bus.

The term you're looking for is "HOT SWAPPABLE". Its possible thanks to the USB, or universal serial bus. Of the 4 connectors involved, the 2 data and 2 power strips connect at slightly different times. Look at a connector and you'll see that the two in the center are set back farther than the outer ones.
