You put 2001 Mazda 626 in reverse then you shift it into drive but the car still went in reverse until you turned off the engine and it would not start again The gear shift is very loose what is wrong?

the linkage between the trans and shifter is what i would check first. also, there is a switch that prevents the car from starting unless its in N or P
