Unless you're looking to go off-road you really shouldn't be looking at a MTB. Ask around at a few local bike stores, see if any of them deals with used bikes, look for a hybrid. You'll get a good price and some sort of promise about the basic quality and safety of what you've bought. Spend some money and they are likely to prove helpful in things like another saddle, locks or whatever else it is that you'll need.
