Try or check the o2 sensors.
5w30 is preferred especially in colder climates. 10w30 can also be used. For older engines the new high milage oils are helpful.

i had the same problem with my Nissan pathfinder, it ran great but got horrible milage. i was told it's a problem with the O2 sensors on the exhaust system. they're designed to adjust fuel injection if too much fuel is getting through the exhaust.

You should check the milage on a used Mercedes Benz. If the milage is really high, there may be some problems with the engine or other parts. If the milage is low then that is a good thing and there shouldn't be any problems with the engine.
