Take the car to an automotive electrical specialist and have the electrical system tested. Don't guess, don't try replacing parts to see if that solves the problem. Testing is cheaper in the long run.

( i happen to have the same problem and i did replace the battery adn the main fuse . then it started to work for about a day adn then i finally said it must be the alternator and pulled it out got it tested at the local autozone and had to replace it however i did replace it and now i cant seem to get the belt back on and i cnat find the pully to do so ( if that helps at all ) also it wouldn't be a bad idea to get the electrical system tested )

What happens when an alternator goes bad?

When the alternator is no longer generating power, your vehicle will slowly run down the battery until there is not enough power to fire the spark plugs, at which time your engine dies. You can recharge your battery, but you'll be lucky to get more than a few minutes out of the battery without the alternator applying a steady charge to it. When the battery loses charge, along with no voltage being produced by the the alternator - the combustion of the engine is compromised. This can result in misfire, inefficient fuel consumption and the possibility of the exhaust baffler exploding! this is because the unburnt fuel gets pushed into the exhaust, where it then ignites. This happened to me after jump starting my car for 3months, when the alternator gave up.

This is something that is almost impossible. If this is happening on your Ford Escort you have some serious wiring problems.

What if your alternator is not bad but battery still dies?

The most common cause of a battery not holding its charge is corroded battery cables. That is the end of the cable which connects to the battery. The battery has a post that sticks up and the cable ends in a hole. The hole in the connector is pushed down over the post and is tightened with a bolt on the cable end connector. When this connection gets corroded, the higher resistance prevents the battery from receiving the normal amount of current from the alternator and so gradually it dies. You can buy a gizmo at any auto store that is designed to clean both the post and the connector with the hole. One end does the post and the other does the hole. BTW, I learned about this from my mechanic who always looked for the simplest explanation for a problem first, and thereby saved his customers a lot of money.
