Without the year, make or model it could be any of the following..
1. Relay.
2. Sensors.
3. Clutch hub worn out.
4. A/C - heater controller.
5. PCM or ECM bad.
It would be best to scan the vehicles computer so that you can find out just what is wrong......
Turn the compressor off.
Turn off the defroster.
If it has AC assist and the compressor is shot, cut the belt or disconnect the defrost from the compressor.
Something is wrong with it. Turn it off until you can have it looked at. Continued short cycling will kill the compressor.
If you want it constantly running jumper the high pressure cut off switch wire. And if you dont want it running turn off the ac. If pully is seized see if a napa can get a shorter belt to route around the ac compressor
Because it might overheat or need a break.
low on freon
because it is going through defrost cycle
most likely it is out of freon
Any of the following can cause it to shut off......... 1. Turn off the switch.. 2. Turn off the ignition key.. 3. Change the control to heat only..
There are several things that can cause your air conditioning compressor to turn off after five seconds. The most common cause is a lack of Freon pressure. Check your air conditioning hoses for a leak.
It could be the AC compressor. With the engine and key off, try turning the compressor by hand. The belt should be connected to a pulley that drives the clutch. With the engine off the cluth is disengaged so you should be able to turn the inner part of the compressor pulley even though the outer part is connected to the belt. If it won't turn at all, it's probably siezed and you need a new compressor.
