for transverse engine having a fan motor, wait for the fan motor to auto-run. that is the operating temp of the engine.
when engine reaches operating temp. ask someone for assistance to shift the lever to drive.
procedure:
engage handbrake.
step on brake pedal and shift lever to DRIVE for about 5sec.
then shift back to NEUTRAL,
pull the dipstick and measure fluid/oil
level at this point should be in max. level
repeat procedure then measure the fluid.
add fluid if necessary.
this procedure is first step before any repair and no trouble codes present.
if problem still exist after oil level check/add
it may require an scan tool to check other possible cause like output/input sensors/ or other related parts
You most likely have low tranny fluid. Check and add proper type & amount of fluid.

worst case, transmission is slipping and its turning before the gear catches. try lucas transmission stop slip if so. also you could need motor mounts, if your mounts are bad when the transmission goes into gear it moves the engine first and will also make a thud type of sound. take the car to your local tech and have them inspected.
