Your cavalier is overheating with the thermostat in it it is new the top hose gets hot and the bottom stays cold the thermostat opens in boiling water why doesn't it open in the car?

You may need to get a lower temperature thermostat, they come in various settings ie 160 degrees, 140 degrees ect. If the water temperature gets to that degrees then the thermostat opens. You may have an engine that needs a lower degree one.

the thermostat is located behind the water pump. there are 2 8mm bolts holding it in. unscrew, pull old thermostat out, put new one in and put back together. Simple - 9 I would have given it a 10 but the bottom bolt can be a pin to get to.

The spring is made from heat sensitive metal and is what opens and closes the thermostat as it expands & contracts. If the thermostat is installed upside down, the spring will not be in the coolant and will not open until it gets hotter than the specified temp of the thermostat and could cause overheating problems and coolant flow issues.
