One of the reasons this happens is that the anal sacs are blocked. The other reason this might be happening is that the dog is allergic to some type of food. When this happened to our dog I took him to the vet and they drained his glands. When this did not alleviate the problem we realized that it was an allergy to a certain food I had given the dog. They prescribed a prescription to stop the itching and he has been great since then. I now only feed him hypoallergenic treats or make home made liver treats. Hope this helps.

Another reason could be a flea infestation. Only takes a few fleas to bite the dog to set off a skin reaction. So check for fleas and be sure to use a flea prevention program such as Frontline monthly or some other type of product. All it takes is one flea to bite the dog or cat to set off a reaction. It is the flea saliva that causes the problem so keep the fleas off. The first answer was very good to this question was very good. For a good dog food, I recommend Natural Choice. You just don't want a food that has any wheat, by products, soy or corn in it. Read the label on the food and look at the first 3 ingredients. You want to see things like chicken meal, not chicken "by products" and again no Wheat.
