Your dog may like the crate, but sending you the message they prefer to be with you during the night. Train the dog to lay on the carpet next to the bed on command. They just want to be close to you. You didn't mention the age of your dog. Crates are for training purposes and I prefer the large plastic ones (even for small dogs) with a blanket inside. Dogs will not mix their bed with bathroom duties so it's important that puppies are let out 10 - 15 minutes after having water or eating. For adult dogs they should go outside every 4 - 5 hours and that's cutting it close. When in doubt think of yourself and your bathroom habits. Some dogs can have diarrhea and feel very bad if they go in their crates. They can have stomach upsets just like humans so I nix the crates. You can train you dog inside the crate, let them out, and once trained leave the crate there with door open and they may prefer to go into their crate for a snooze, but not to be penned in. Dogs are meant to be with family so it's important they are trained correctly. In most pet stores there are many brochure type books on the breed of your dog and good training tips. Also going to training with your dog is plus for you. The dog will listen to commands far better and save you a lot of grief.
