5 Steps to Heavenly PMs - (1) Make sure that they are suitably qualified and have the right character in the first place, if not get them trained up or get rid of them (It may sound harsh, but not everyone is capable or wants to be a PM, however some may just be attracted by the salary). If you don't get rid of the inappropriate people, they will soon drag your other PMs down - asking them questions, causing havoc that others need to clean up or loosing you business. (2) On the job training is the best, but don't throw your best potential in the deep end, make sure you start them off with smaller projects with mentors and coaches. (3) Make sure they have a personal development plan, you have some money to continually train them or provide them training opportunities - e.g a PM Library of good texts is a good and cheap starting point. (4) Make sure that they share their good and bad experiences with each other - lunch and learns is another good example - you provide the free lunch, they learn in their lunchtimes at no additional cost you you. (5) Keep them on their toes, evaluate them and if they are not up to the task, move them on - either to different roles or out through the door.

When I was 12 going on 13 I set up a jewellery business called mifo - I made jewellery out of fimo, a coloured clay, based on the Venetian art of Millefiori, which is the technique used to put lettering in Blackpool rock. Over the first month I had made £600 on selling my jewellery at lunchtimes at school (with permission from my headteacher of course!) and at craft fairs around Yorkshire from this I won several awards, one of them included a cash prize and the chance to meet our deputy prime minister, by that time my friends started to help me every so often and I was giving hem free pieces of jewellery for all their hard work. A few months later I gave a presentation to some business people and ended up with offers for parts of my company, which we are still in the process of agreeing with and making the deal. I have recently won a competition in Sheffield called the BiG challenge, which is for up and coming entrepreneurs of the younger generation. The prize for this was a holiday to Madrid which I am really looking forward to. I am now nearly 14 and I am still carrying on with Mifo, I have plans to start selling to shops and expanding my business. I really do enjoy having a business but it does have its strains, I can get very tearful and upset and my grades luckily haven't dropped but if I focus too much on my business whilst I'm in school there is the risk that they will. Though remember, this all started with one bright little idea and the enthusiasm to go all the way.
