Most shells tend to be delicate so you probably should be somewhat careful after have taken the jewelry off and put it in the jewelry box but while wearing it shouldn't be a problem.

Never ever put clear nail polish on fashion jewelry! two reasons: 1) it will get cloudy and chip quickly, making your jewelry look like heck, and 2) it will act as a solvent and make your settings fall out.
To keep your jewelry from tarnishing, get a good quality polishing cloth and wipe them down occasionally. You can also use a weak solution (5%) of ammonia in water to clean your jewelry.
