Following repeal of the Volstead Act, the first permit to
legally produce beer was issued to "Papa Joe" Griesedieck, who
offered bottled beer on April 7, 1933 under the Falstaff bramd. The
company traced its roots to 1848, when Adam Lemp started brewing
beer in St. Louis; most breweries made ale, not beer. Although
Falstaff was still popular in the 1960s - the 3th largest in the US
- but mismanagement led to falling sales, and the lasr Falstaff
brewery close in 1990.
Beer had been bottled in the british isles since the 1600s, but
the corks were wired down like champagne is. Bottled beer was
produced in the colonies before the US existed, with bottles scarce
and expensive, The first to bottle beer under a crown cap was
probably William Painter, who patented the crown cap in 1892.
