Review

Human started to break Death to a wider audience, after Chuck Schuldiner nearly disbanded the group. Schuldiner's playing has improved immensely since Scream Bloody Gore, as have his compositional skills. He writes strange, dissonant, harmonized guitar lines and is one of the few death metal songwriters who changes moods and textures over the course of an album; Human's second half is actually almost subdued by death metal standards. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Human is the fourth album by death metal band Death, released in 1991. The album marked the beginning of a major stylistic change for Death. The actual sound of the album is much more technically accomplished and progressive than Death's previous efforts. The lyrics are now more introspective and meaningful as opposed to the gore based lyrics of the band's first two albums or the social commentary on Spiritual Healing. This new style would be more and more prevalent on all following Death albums.

Human is widely seen as Death's most accomplished work, and one of extreme metal's defining albums, with indications such as being Death's bestselling album, with sales of over 70,000 in the United States[1], being ranked number 82 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine's list of the greatest 100 guitar albums of all time, and having one of Death's two music videos which was made for the song "Lack of Comprehension", which received some airplay on MTV. It also continues to accumulate extremely positive reviews to this day.

Bass player Steve DiGiorgio left after the recording of this album (though he would later return to record Individual Thought Patterns). He was replaced by Skott Carino, who toured with the band in 1991-1992. Skott also recorded a few seconds of bass on Cosmic Sea, and the rest of the song (including the bass solo) was recorded by DiGiorgio.

As of 2008, "Human" has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.[citation needed]
