Biography

A child actress who made her film debut as the star of Anjelica Huston's 1996 adaptation of Dorothy Allison's Bastard out of Carolina, Jena Malone has appeared in films ranging from Contact (1997), in which she played the younger version of Jodie Foster's character, to Stepmom (1998), which featured her as one of Susan Sarandon's children. A native of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where she was born November 21, 1984, Malone was influenced to become an actress by her mother, who was active in community theatre. After persuading her mom to move to L.A., the aspiring actress began working in commercials and music videos. Following her debut in Bastard out of Carolina, she went on to do steady work, and in 2000, she starred in Christmas with J.D., which also featured Devon Sawa, Neve Campbell, and Christian Campbell. That same year, the young actress made headlines when she filed charges against her mother accusing her of squandering her earnings; the lawsuit resulted in Malone's legal emancipation from her mother, who was forbidden from interfering with her daughter's career and earnings. Coming out on the up side of the bitter family feud, Malone could next be seen in both the slightly surreal teen fantasy Donnie Darko and the bittersweet family drama Life as a House (both 2001). Jena Malone (born November 21, 1984) is an American actress and musician. Her film work has been mainly in independent films, and she has acted in theater.

She made her cinema debut with the movie Bastard Out of Carolina (1996), and has appeared in films including Contact (1997), Stepmom (1998), Donnie Darko (2001), Saved! (2004), and Into the Wild (2007).

Life and career

Early life

Malone was born in Sparks, Nevada,[1] and lived in 27 different locations by the age of nine, including Lake Tahoe, California.[2] Malone was raised by her mother, Deborah, and her mother's girlfriend, whom she calls "Godmom".[3] She began taking an interest in acting after watching her mother, who was involved in community theatre.[4] She briefly moved to Las Vegas, hated it, and persuaded her mother to move on to Los Angeles.[5] She completed high school early by taking the GED.[6]

Career

Malone progressed to professional acting with the 1996 film Bastard Out of Carolina.[7] She was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance[8] and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance in a TV Movie or Miniseries for this role. From there, her roles have grown to include several Hollywood features. In 1997, she was nominated for a Golden Globe, Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie, for her role in Hope. After several years of home schooling, she briefly attended the Professional Children's School in New York.[5] In January 2000, Malone won legal emancipation from her mother, to bar maternal interference with her career and earnings; Malone has said that her mother "mismanaged" some of her earnings.[9]

Malone co-produced the 2002 film American Girl, a drama in which she also acted. She had her first starring role in the 2004 film Saved!. In 2006, she made her professional stage debut in the Broadway production of the Tony Award winning play Doubt.

In 2007, it was announced that she was releasing her first single on The Social Registry, a New York City experimental music label. A number of tracks were posted to her MySpace page,[10] and the first single, a 7" vinyl record featuring two tracks, was scheduled for release in 2007[citation needed]. Pitchfork Media has described her music as "pretty out-there-- bedroom electronics, spaced-out keyboards, and Malone's spare vocals."[11]

Malone appeared in the horror film The Ruins, which was released on April 4, 2008 and co-starred Shawn Ashmore, Laura Ramsey, and Jonathan Tucker and played Lavinia in an off-Broadway revival of Mourning Becomes Electra in 2009.
