Diotrephes and Demetrius are mentioned in 3 John, written by an unknown author who called himself "the Presbyter." Diotrephes has emerged as a leader in the community and has decided to keep out travelling missionaries, including those from the presbyter. His refusal of hospitality, causes the presbyter to write 3 John to Gaius, seemingly a wealthy person in a neighbouring community. Gaius has been providing hospitality on a temporary basis, but the presbyter wants him to take over larger responsibility for helping the missionaries, including Demetrius, who will soon arrive.
