Established in 1937, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) supports and conducts research, training, information dissemination about what causes cancer, ways to prevent the disease, and how it can be treated. As a component of the National Institutes of Health (itself one of eight agencies comprising the Public Health Service), the National Cancer Institute falls under the purview of the Department of Health and Human Services. The organization operates a variety of its own programs and supports the research and medical centers of others; about half of its budget is allotted for funding research project grants. The NCI is pursuing an ambitious goal of eliminating cancer-related death and suffering by 2015.
