The NFL Draft (officially the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting^[1]) is an annual sports draft in which National Football League (NFL) teams take turns, through seven rounds^[2], selecting amateur college American football players and other first-time eligible players.

The draft is always presided over by the NFL commissioner, currently Roger Goodell.

The draft

The draft is usually held the last weekend of April at a site in New York City. It usually begins just after Noon Eastern Daylight time with the commissioner opening the draft by declaring the team with the worst record in the league as being on the clock. This means that they have 15 minutes left to get their pick up to the stage, where it is announced to the world. The draft ends late Sunday afternoon with the announcement of the final pick of the 7th round who becomes noted as Mr. Irrelevant and the last person picked in the draft though teams have the right to snap up any undrafted college players by signing them as free agents.

Minutes allowed between picks per round

• 1st Round-15 minutes
• 2nd Round-10 minutes
• 3rd-7th Rounds-5 minutes
