The Parliament of Barbados is the supreme legislative body of the country of Barbados. The Parliament of Barbados is bicameral in structure with an appointed Senate, and an elected House of Assembly.

Definition: According to Chapter five of the Constitution of Barbados the Parliament of Barbados is composed of three elements.

• the Sovereign (currently Queen Elizabeth II, represented by Governor-General Sir Clifford Husbands),
• the Senate, and
• the House of Assembly.

The Senate (upper house) – is the direct successor of a pre-Independence body known as the "Legislative Council" – comprises 21 senators. seven appointed directly by the governor-general's discretion: twelve are chosen by the advice of the Prime Minister, and two on the advice of the Leader of the opposition.

The House of Assembly (lower house) – is made up of 30 (previously 24) Members of Parliament, elected to five-year terms on a first-past-the-post basis in single-seat constituencies.

Buildings

The west-wing of the Parliament of Barbados, completed in 1872.

The architectural style of the Parliament buildings are Gothic, and reminiscent of the Victorian era of Great Britain (see British colonization of Barbados for more information). A prominent feature of both coral-limestone structures is the clock tower attached to the west-wing. Windows of the buildings have louvered shutters for blocking out direct-sun light.
