In an interview, Win Butler, said that before they began writing for the album, he had gotten a letter from an old friend from his home town, Houston Texas. In the letter there was a picture of his friend near the mall Win and his friends hung out often as kids. He said that it brought back memories and was inspired to write an album about childhood and the pureness of being a kid. The song "The Suburbs" sort of sums up the whole concept of the album.
