If the mother is negative, and the father is positive, the child has a 50% chance of coming out positive. If the mom is negative and the baby is positive, there is a chance that the mom will develop antibodies against the baby's blood. It generally doesn't affect the first child (since it takes time for the mom to develop the antibodies), but for the second child onward it can cause a serious complication.
If the mom is given a drug called RhoGam once during pregnancy and once again just before delivery, it can prevent her from making those antibodies. Thus reducing the chance that her immune system will attack subsequent children.
