Either the cam gear or distributor gear are completely worn out or the more probable. The gear on the distributor is installed using a roll pin. It's possible this is worn out and broken.

Otherwise, the engine will just crank but not start. You can check the timing by finding Top Dead Center on the #1 spark plug and remove the distributer cap to see if the rotor is pointung to the #1 spark plug wire tower. If it is not pointing correcly, you can loosen the hold-down bolt on the distributer and manually rotate it. Once the engine starts and warms up, you can then slowly rotate the distributer clockwise and counter-clockwise until you get the best "purr" of the engine. For a more precise setting, use a timing gun to set the timing. If by "still fire" you mean the spark plugs stilll fire, yes they will if there is nothing wrong with the firing system. If you do not get a spark or get a weak spark, you will have to check the plug wires and all components, including the coil.
