The oil light being on indicates low or no oil pressure. Low oil pressure can be caused by: Engine is too low on oil. Oil filter is plugged up. Oil pump has failed. Oil pressure switch has failed. You should not run the engine until the oil pressure problem is solved, major engine damage may occur otherwise.
The tapping may be caused by the hydraulic valve lifters being out of oil.
