depending on what temp you car is running at, at cold it should be around 2000 but after a few mins when you temp rises it goes to about 1700-1500 rpm's. WHen your engine temp guage is at the thermostat operation temperature, your car should idle between 700 - 1000 rpms. If it doesn't do that and, WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING THE CAR TEMP DROPS BELOW ABOUT THE CENTRE POINT, it means you thermostat is stuck open and you need a new one. If you over heat, that is bad and you thermostat is stick closed.
WHen driving, your rpm's are high because corolla gts's come with a close range 5 speed manual gear box. Close range means higher gear ratio's which is a performance feature not friendly to fuel economy. It is good around the city though. So if at 110 km/h your car revs at 3600 rpm, well that is normal. The 2nd generation 4AGE engine is a high reving engine anyway so its ok if you stay under 5000 rpm and change the oil ever 4000 - 5000 km with a good mineral oil like castrol gtx or syntheitcs. Also never use fram oil filters, oil pressure guage will tell you all you need to know.
