Could be temp sensor or gauge is defective
If your engine light is on chances are you have a defective thermal sensor. It's location is found on the bottom side of intake on 90 Ford rangers w/ 2.3l. If new sensor doesn't do the trick pull the instrument cluster and check plug connector by squeezing side release tabs. look to make sure copper connectors have no oxidization.
OK. so after some more research it turns out that there is a coolant temperature sensor as well as a coolant temperature sending unit. The sending unit is used for the gauge, the sensor used for the cooling fans. The sending unit for the 2.3L is on the left rear of engine, above the oil filter. For the 2.9L it is on the intake manifold, below the throttle body.
i have a 1990 ford ranger and my fule gauge always reads full, why?
1990 Chevrolet Lumina temperature sender is located on the back side of the thermostat housing. The sender has a wire that goes to the temperature gauge.
The gauge has failed.
Try to see if there is a common ground wire to these 2 gauges. If there is make sure it is grounded to a clean dry grounding site and see if this helps.
If not losing coolant Could be thermostat slow to respond to temperature changes Could be gauge itself check temperature with thermometer Remember gauges are just a guide they are not gospel and sometimes malfunction
Check the fuses first!
You most definately unpluged the sensor wire. It's a single red wired that plugs onto a sensor just passed the thermostat.
It's most likely the sending unit. have your mech check that for you.
A 1990 Ford Ranger is OBD I / EEC IV - if that's what you are asking

Either the sensor is broken or Your gaug on the dash is not working.
Temperature Gauge Sending Unit The sending unit is located in the front section of the intake manifold in the vicinity of the thermostat.
