My 1987 740gle speedo quit working. I checked the transmission for the sending unit/cable and found nothing. I found out this car uses an electric unit. It is located on the rear axle. It has a plug with 2 wires located on the differential cover. check it out, I'll guess you have a wire broken or maybe it just simply came unplugged.
