If the problem is performance or emissions related, the trouble codes will be stored in memory. If you don't have access to a scanner, go to your public library and see if they have a repair manual (Haynes or Chilton) for your vehicle available for checkout. The trouble codes can be retrieved manually on vehicles before 1995. You will find instructions on how to do it and what each trouble code means. There's no sense in buying and replacing parts hoping to find and solve the problem one part at a time. If you would rather buy a manual to keep as future reference, you can find one at your local auto parts store for $11 - $14. I have made it a habit to always buy one whenever I buy a vehicle. - sure saves a lot of headaches (and money) for the home mechanic. +++Another possible answer +++ I have the exact same problem on my 1994 e350. Same symptoms, and diags however, what I have noticed on mine is that the altinator AMPS tend to drop when this happens, the computer needs a steady 12-14 volts to work correctly and yet again I was told that this was a common problem with these engines as the ports in the intake tent to clogg and restrict the air flow. I get no engine lite at all thru-out however. I have access to all-data, chiltons and Mitchael on demand? no info other than the tsb's and they don't provide much info either?? I will let ytou know if the alternator changes anything....
