First it is most likely the fuel system. I started my searching after the same problem by replacing all of the fuel filters. Then i checked for a kinked fuel line and found that i had a bad / clogged fuel pickup sock inside the gas tank. As everyone else will tell you good filters are a must. But a fuel pump that has been on your vehicle for over a hundred thousand miles should be replaced , not checked. Many sending units also develop leaks at the bends where they come out of the tank. It is a pain in the butt to get a couple of freinds to help you pick up the bed of the truck to change these out and put everything back, but why you are at it make sure that you check out the bottom of the gas tank with a flshlight REALLY GOOD to make sure that there is no water or crud in the bottom. If you find any , then you will have to purchase new gas tank hold up straps and take the tank off of the vehicle to flush it out and reinstall it. SHUCKS ! IT MIGHT BE A DIRTY AIR FILTER ! If not that then it will have to go to a TRUSTWORTHY gargage. I used a tree and a chain fall to pick my bed up the third time. The sock LOOKED perfect. Not so! Plugged. The same on my Ford Escort with 150,000 miles, just the fuel pump there.
