The transmission is controled by the computer. If it will not shift, there is a problem. There is no (vacuum) modulator. Take the car to a dealer or a good transmission shop.
Be prepared to have it rebuilt or replaced.
There are a couple of reasons why a 1993 Mercury Villager is hard to shift. One reason could be a gear shift cable. Another reason could be low transmission fluid.
It would help if you could say what the symptoms are.

It's in the center of the block. Engine disassembly needed. <><><><><> Not certain, but I thought knock sensors were mounted to the head or intake manifold in such a way that they could be replaced without major disassembly.
With the third row option it is a 7 passenger vehicle, though you could squeeze in 8.
It depends on the failure. It could be on immediately or it could take days.
If you don't have experience doing this I suggest you take it to a glass shop, or you could do more harm than good.
It could be water that got under your distributor cap
the ignition control module could be the problem
windshield wiper motor. Or it could be the wiper module. If under the hood, its the motor. The module is usually located inside the car.
Given the extensive amount of disassembly required, this could cost anywhere from $450 and up.
