This is a 17 mm bolt under the crankcase, a bit to the left. Make sure it is well tightened so that no oil can leak out. Replace if necessary.

It's in the radiator drain plug hole.
On lower left side of engine, behind the water pump, it is a hex headed bolt.
The engine ser.# is on the lower l/h side of the crankcase above the oil drain plug.
To drain the cooling system on a 1985 vt500c. Take the drain screw out of the water pump. It looks like one of the cover screws but the one on the bottom is the drain. hope this helps.
