A Service Engine light and a Check Engine light have the same purpose - to alert the driver that a malfunction has been detected by a sensor(s). It would behoove you to take your vehicle to an auto parts store (AutoZone or similar) that does free scans and have the touble code(s) retrieved to find what made the light come on. Some manufacturers call it a Check Engine light and others call it a Service Engine light, but as mentioned above they serve the same pirpose. I don't think your vehicle would have it labeled both ways.
This is the date the vehicle was first purchased and used by the original owner, which means when the vehicle was bought NEW and not when the second owner bought it used.

You cannot return a vehicle. If you bought the used car "AS IS" with no warranty then you bought it as is, which means, exactly that, AS IS. If however you bought it with a warranty then the warranty may cover the repair.

Simple marketplace rules - supply and demand. Ask anyone who bought a house in the last two years, or who is trying to unload a gas-guzzling Suburban Useless Vehicle.
When I bought my Suburban in Virginia, I gave the seller a deposit to keep his plates and registration on the truck until I got home to Florida. When I registered the truck and sent his tag back, he returned my $200.00.
