I have this same problem. A broken shifter box. I will repost a fix as soon asap.
Not really describing answer , but i would assume you shifter cables have broken
Loose hold down clamp or broken shift cable.
transmission shift bolt loose try pushing gear shifter all the way back to park
If you can run the shifter down through the positions it may have broken loose at the transmission . If the shifter doesn't move at all it may be a problem in the steering column < unless it is a floor shifter >. If it is a floor shift model I'd start by checking the shifter release button to see if it is broken.
blown fuse under hood check all brake fuses....also could be bad relay at shifter u have to take shifter loose to replace at bottom of shifter
Ummmm, the shift cable broke or came off the lever under the dash?
I have the similar situation on my shifter on my 1991 pontiac sunbird 2.0 Liter. The shifter was kinda loose last two year, but it shifted fine. However, 2 days ago. When I put in "Park" gear, it was still moving forward, I put in "Rear" gear, it felt like in "Park", when I put in "Drive" gear, it felt like in "neutral". And the shifter is sometimes very loose, but back to normal when I put the shifter back and forth. I took it to a transmission store, they found out the "shift linkage cable" from the shift to the transmission was broken. I changed it today and so far no problem.
its for manual shift, slide the shifter over when in drive and you push the shifter up to + to shift up and down to - to down shift
Sounds like the linkage is loose
Shifter or Shift Knob
Tighten bolt on shifter
The cable was bad. The shift cable had come loose from one of its mounts and was resting against the exhaust manifold causing it to melt the plastic housing and the cable began to stick.
