If your shifter is on the steering column, the problem is probably under the dashboard on the steering column. It is an easy fix.
remove the panel under the steering column, and spray silicon lubricant on the shift lever that extends out of the column that the shift cable is attached to.
9 times out of 10 this will be the problem.
Or, you could follow the other suggestions or have your transmission replaced. but at some point, you will need to lubricate this linkage to fix the problem.
