This is just a stab in the dark, but have you tried to add freon? There is enough Freon because it will cool when the weather is not hot. The cooling or lack of cooling is on and off, most noticeably not cooling when it hot outside. It's my understanding that there is some module tied in with other electronics that controls the switching from heater to air conditioning behind the center dash. I'm hoping someone out there have experienced the same problem on a 1997 Taurus and found a solution.
