Snap ring is broken that holds the knob on. Turn the knob to see if it drops down. If this is not the problem it will be the mechanism in the handle.
transmission won't engage when you push the button on john deer 155c automatic
same problem, did you ever find the solution?
It sounds like you need a new transmission. I had the same problem but I replaced the transmission and decided to trade it in.
There is a service bulletin out on this problem (NUMBER: 21-015-05, GROUP: Transmission, DATE: September 01, 2005). It seems that fluid will drain from the torque converter after the vehicle sets awhile causing the slow to engage problem. According to Dodge, while it causes customer concern, it is not detrimental to the transmission. There is a new version of a transmission cooler filter which when installed mitigates the problem.
The shift censor could be going bad. There may also be a problem with the transmission linkage which would cause this problem.
I am facing the same exact problem with my Nissan Altima 2000. Did you find the solution?
Is the car auto or manual? check fluidlevels first, have you noticed any burning smells prior to problem? Does it not engage in all gears including reverse?
The torque converter and clutch are the point where the engine and the transmission engage.
It may have the original transfer case that was recalled
That is certainly a possibility. Shifter linkage can cause problems with transmissions but you cannot know for certain without getting a little closer to the problem. If the transmission shifts out of and back into park and the wheels actually lock then it's PROBABLY not a shift linkage problem. If you aren't mechanically inclined you may need to take the vehicle to a specialist. If the transmission is shifting out of park normally but the transmission will not engage, you probably have something wrong with the transmission, such as the hydraulic pump, internal valve body, clutch pack or any of a number of other potential problems. Good luck.
With the engine running , and your foot on the brake pedal , shift to neutral , select 4x4 low and then put transmission in gear ( for use on surfaces that allow " slippage " such as gravel etc . ) To select 4x4 low the transmission must be in neutral to engage / disengage
If the button is not working, might be a vacuum line problem. Vacuum lines engage the 4x4, might need to check the lines to the 4x4 transfer case.
