1999 Chevy asto van it wont go in reverse or second gear what could cause this?

Can't remember if mine would go into second, but I did have an issue with not going into reverse. The reverse gear shaft/hub was fractured inside the transmission. Had to do a complete rebuild. GM, upgraded the shaft to strenghten this because of this failure. Hope this helps, Mark
