1. You can scan the vehicles computer to pinpoint the problem's..
2. Check all of the a/c pressure switches..
3. Check the clutch coil and pressure switches pigtails..
4. Check for loose grounds..

This is not a DIY job. It is illegal to release refrigerant into the atmosphere. Special equipment must be used to purge the system before removing and re-installing the compressor. The new compressor and system must then be charged correctly with refrigerant and oil. Take it to a professional.

The compressor is coming on because you have the heater set to defrost. Take it off defrost and the compressor will not come on. I would suspect the compressor is locked up.
