2000 catera and check engine and track light are on no speedometer or odometer worked a few times then the lights came back on please help i just got the car and the lights are.?

The check engine light is for notifying you that you have a component failure. It is to alert you to check the codes with a OBDII reader. You could have more than failure of your Traction control, which is also your ABS controller. The failure of the ABS/Traction controller is a fairly common occurrence in Catera. You will have to remove the controller and replace it. These controllers are VERY expensive new, running around the $600 price range. You can get rebuilt units off of Ebay for under $250 and used ones for around $150 or less.
As for the speedo/odometer not working they are electronically controlled at the transmission and the signal is sent to the instrument cluster. This cluster has a plug behind it that is mounted into metal and the contacts are mounted on the cluster back. If you have any corrosion in the plug you will get intermittent results. Start with the easiest first and check the speedometer sensor on the transmission first. Make sure that there s a good connection to the wiring plug. Intermittent problems are almost always a connection not a component. If all looks good at the transmission, remove the instrument cluster and using a very fine wet/dry sandpaper, clean up the contacts in both plugs of the instrument cluster plug.

The fuse for the dash lights on a 2002 Chevy Tahoe is in the fuse box in the interior of the vehicle. There is also a fuse for this in the engine compartment on top of the battery. This fuse is for the speedometer and odometer lights.

If the abs and check engine lights are on there is a problem. Both computers should have codes stored in there memories. Have the codes read. You can then diagnose the cause.
