it is a switch. They have a bad habit of getting wet and shorting out. I have the same problem and mine is on the rear tailgate hatch. But i can not find the switch.

Many have found the problem to be the sensor getting dirty over time. A great way to fix the issue at minimal cost is to purchase some contact cleaner and WD-40. Excessively spray on and around the door latch with contact cleaner, while opening and shutting the door. Dry or wipe down the latch and do the same with WD-40. Apply a good amount of WD on it while continually opening and closing the door. This should solve most issues with door ajar sensor. -Good Luck!
