Just had same problem, only speedo disappeared, dealer was going to replace display at horrendous cost.
Remove trim from around display (slots on upper surface, whole trim will pop out),display held on by 2 torx screws, will slide out. There are a dozen or so bulbs which take 1/4 turn to remove. You can change unlit ones or as advised, all bulbs, 12 I think.
These are £2 each at Halfrauds or 50p at dealers, or you can eBay it and get any colour display you want (blue looks good).
Easy fix, entire unit coming up on £500, plus fitting and usual computer charges, not far off £k.

Too complicated to answer here but Haynes' repair book has a pretty good description of the process. You can get one at most auto parts stores but AVOID the Chilton manuals, they are garbage!
