There may be a bad sensor. Get it scanned for codes at a parts store, i.e. Advance Auto for free. You need to know what codes if any are present. Could be a sensor related issue like the TPS throttle position sensor or MAF mass air flow sensor or O2 oxygen sensor etc. Anything 96 and newer really needs to be scanned for codes. You could also try unhooking the pos and neg battery cables for 5-10 mins and then rehooking. This will reset the system and possibly help with the issue. If it doesn't help, then it needs attention.
