I have a 2003 (3.8) coupe and was stuck in the parking lot for 2 hours. Here's my fix.
1) set the parking brake
2) step on the brake pedal.
3) start the engine.
4) back the key off a single click to kill the engine (just the one click - not all the way).
5) push the button on the shift lever and move the lever to N.
6) start the car.
7) push the button and move the shift lever to D.
Now drive over to see your mechanic and get this fixed immediately - you will not have brake lights until this is repaired.
Hope this help a few or a lot.
